Ethnic Skin

People of color make up the majority of the world’s population, yet there is a rudimentary understanding of the differences in skin structure & function in ethnic skin types. The most obvious difference in skin of color is melanin. Melanin is photoprotective and plays a role in the rate of skin aging. However, increased melanin also makes darker skin more vulnerable to depigmentation. An additional feature common to ethnic skin is a thicker dermis which contributes to a lower incidence of wrinkles however, a more vulnerable epidermis (outer layer) makes the skin prone to dehydration and irritation. Dr. Christie and her team understand the differences in skin types and are experts in ethnic skin care.
