Elevate Your Smile
Our lips play a central role in communicating emotion through smiling, frowning, and exhibiting distaste or pleasure. The lips show signs of aging by loss of volume and, in some patients, elongation of the distance between the nose and upper lip. With a lip lift Los Angeles plastic surgeon Dr. Christie can reverse many of these signs of aging. Dr. Christie takes an individualized approach to each Lip Lift procedure, ensuring your lips stay youthful, beautiful, and uniquely you. Learn more by scheduling your private consultation today.
A lip lift is a procedure that shortens the space between the top lip and the base of the nose by getting rid of extra skin just below the nose. The cuts are made in the natural creases around the nose to hide the incisions. By making the space between the nose and the top lip shorter, more of the red area (vermillion) is shown, making your lips look fuller and younger. A Lip Lift will also roll the vermillion border, the line between your lip skin and vermillion. This helps make the Cupid's bow stand out more and shows off more of your upper teeth (tooth show).
Your Look, Leveled Up
One of the easiest ways to address aging lips is with temporary lip fillers. In patients with longer distances of the upper lip, lip fillers can actually create an increased visual length of the lip and appear unbalanced and unnatural. This can be compounded in patients who have also had rhinoplasty with tip rotation. Dr. Christie’s approach to restoring the facial balance of the lower and mid-face is to be conservative with the removal of just the right amount of excess skin. This, combined with her meticulous surgical technique, gives her patients the best possible scar scenario.
A good candidate for lip lift is a patient that has favorable scarring and elongation of the nose-to-lip distance. Patients with nose-to-lip lengths > 20 mm will typically be bothered by the increased length. Lip lifts can be transformed in a good or bad way. It is just as important to select a surgeon who knows how to leave just the right length of skin behind.
Dr. Christie believes in maintaining a natural appearance with each procedure she does. She collaborates extensively with each Los Angeles Lip Lift patient to design a tailored treatment plan. Artistry and Skill
Artistry is an important part of a successful lip lift procedure. Dr. Christie spends significant time planning the incision and observing your animation patterns to determine the correct amount of skin to resect. This procedure can be done in the office under local or under sedation. After detailed marking, Dr. Christie will inject you with numbing medication, remove the excess skin with artful expertise then close with precision.
Although Dr. Christie customizes recovery for each person, it will likely be quick, with mild swelling in weeks one and two. External sutures are typically removed five to seven days after the surgery. The scar will diminish after two weeks but takes six to eight weeks to heal. After a lip lift Los Angeles patients can usually return to light exercise within two weeks, and Dr. Christie customizes recovery for each person. Dr. Christie considers the scar results to be most critical in this procedure and, as such, will follow you closely to monitor healing. Every patient is placed on a post-operative scar protocol.
Beyond Beautiful Lips
Although you'll notice some improvements immediately, the full impact won't be felt for another two weeks once the swelling has gone down. The incision may take up to three months to heal and fade. In the right patient, a Lip Lift rebalances facial proportions and, when executed well, is a long-lasting high return on your investment procedure.
Most patients typically alleviate discomfort with over-the-counter medication, but many patients experience no post-operative pain. A mild tightness can be experienced for two to three months due to swelling.
Most problems with a lip lift happen because the surgery wasn't done right. When the upper lip is not fixed to a stable base, the tension can cause poor scarring. Additionally, if too much skin is removed, restoring length is challenging. Poor scarring is one of the biggest risks, and patient selection, along with surgical technique, helps mitigate this risk.
When performed correctly, a lip lift won't affect your ability to smile but should rather enhance your smile with improved teeth visibility and fuller lips.
A lip lift will not remove smoker’s lines as these lines represent a change in skin quality and volume loss not addressed with the removal of excess skin.
Dr. Christie believes lip lifts should be a procedure that improves facial proportions as opposed to being used as a technique for lip augmentation. If you have an elongated lower face or mid-face, a lip lift can restore balance in proportions. If you are just looking for fuller lips (and do not have an elongated philtral length), better options include fillers, fat transfer, or lip implants.
